Challenge

As New Zealand’s largest company, Fonterra aims to further its sustainability journey by decarbonising its Whareroa operations in Taranaki, one of the world’s largest dairy manufacturing facilities.

Solution

We structured a contract for a strategic long-term energy partnership, resulting in Fonterra entering a 10-year electricity supply agreement with Contact, starting in August 2026. This begins with 140 GWh of energy to cover existing demand at Whareroa, and increases to 415 GWh by 2028, following the completion of transmission upgrades. Approximately two-thirds of this volume represents new demand from the planned electrification of a sector historically reliant on traditional fuel sources.

Impact

The strategic partnership provides Fonterra with a steady supply of renewable energy, supporting New Zealand’s energy transition. It highlights the value of collaboration between major energy users and generators, as well as the acceleration of decarbonisation. Beyond the Whareroa agreement, we are actively engaging with Fonterra to explore and support a range of electrification projects.
