There’s a lot of literature around about how to reduce climate change. Sifting through it to find substantive solutions can be time consuming. One organisation that has emerged as a leading resource for information and insight about climate solutions is Project Drawdown. It’s a non-profit organisation named after its purpose – to achieve Drawdown – the point in time when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere start to decline.

Since publishing their hugely successful book on the topic they’ve continued to develop that resource by conducting rigorous review and assessment of climate solutions, creating compelling and human communication across mediums, and partnering with others to accelerate climate solutions globally.

The organisation suggests that it is possible for us to achieve Drawdown by mid-century, if we make the best use of all existing climate solutions. It’s an ambitious goal but with global emissions continuing to rise each year it’s one that all organisations should take note of.

In their latest publication, Drawdown Review – Climate Solutions for a New Decade the organisation offers 10 key insights on climate change solutions – including the importance of commitment and collaboration in implementing solutions and the reality that for many of the solutions the financial case is clear – the savings significantly outweigh costs.

The report focuses on a wide range of technological, ecological and lifestyle choice solutions across the three categories:

• Reduce sources – bringing emissions to zero
• Support sinks – uplifting nature’s carbon cycle
• Improve society – fostering equality for all

There’s also a great overview of all the solutions on pages 86-88 of the review that ranks each solution by impact on emissions reduction, the anticipated cost to implement and the net lifetime profit of each solution – you may be surprised with some of the solutions that are in the top 10!
